Chapter Seven

Chloe

The next step, as it turns out, involves a minor clean-up job for Siccario, the kind of thing I suspect Dem normally wouldn’t waste his time on. But Dem’s playing this smart. He wants us to practice working together in public, knowing we’ll get more comfortable the more we’re together. He’s right, too. Even after a mere fifteen minutes walking hand-in-hand in a public park, enjoying the bright Carolina sunshine, I feel like I’ve been with Dem for years—and that the only place I should be in the world is by his side.

It’s stupid, I know, but I can’t help myself. For all that I prefer to work alone, being on an op with Dem simply feels…right.

What doesn’t feel right? This particular op. I sweep my gaze around the park for the fifteenth time, trying to work it out. This is harder than usual, given the enormous Greek currently caging me against a stone monument while he licks his way up my neck.

“Relax, baby doll. We’re a couple in love,” Dem murmurs, his breath soft and hot against my ear. “Put your arms around my neck to cover my face. That’s it.” He shifts, his body completely blocking me from view. “We ran through this several times. Why are you so nervous? Your pulse is too high.”

“Don’t know. But I’ve been doing this a long time. If I’m nervous, there’s a reason for it.”

Dem, to his credit, doesn’t dispute my pushback. Instead he lifts his head and stares down at me, his dark, steady eyes focused and clear. I indulge myself for the barest second to stare back at him, and whatever he sees in my face pleases him. His mouth quirks into a smile before he details the particulars of the job again, looking for the snag. He leans into me intimately, his hands snaking around my back.

“Then we run through it again. The drop has been made, the very nervous extortion client already come and gone, leaving a backpack tucked under the fountain benches. I count three shadows—at your three o’clock, six o’clock, and nine o’clock.”

I already spotted them. “Those are only the ones we see.”

“Agreed.” He nuzzles my neck before feathering kisses along my jaw. “Everyone is watching to see if Siccario will move in now that intel has leaked to him that the extortion of one of his friends was successful. Fools.”

I nod, picking up the thread of the orders as I sigh against his lips. “Siccario doesn’t want the bag. He wants whoever’s picking it up.”

Dem continues. “When the approach is made, we get close enough to identify the target no matter how well-disguised. We have surveillance in place if we can’t make an immediate ID. Siccario is certain it’ll be a primary hitter of one of the other families, so we should be able to make him.”

“Or her.”

“Or her,” he repeats without hesitation. “Siccario wants to know the family only. We are not to engage. Is that understood? No violence.”

“No violence.” I agree, trying to identify why I’m so jacked up.
