Chapter Seven
Chloe
The next step, as it turns out, involves a minor clean-up job for Siccario, the kind of thing I suspect Dem normally wouldnât waste his time on. But Demâs playing this smart. He wants us to practice working together in public, knowing weâll get more comfortable the more weâre together. Heâs right, too. Even after a mere fifteen minutes walking hand-in-hand in a public park, enjoying the bright Carolina sunshine, I feel like Iâve been with Dem for yearsâand that the only place I should be in the world is by his side.
Itâs stupid, I know, but I canât help myself. For all that I prefer to work alone, being on an op with Dem simply feelsâ¦right.
What doesnât feel right? This particular op. I sweep my gaze around the park for the fifteenth time, trying to work it out. This is harder than usual, given the enormous Greek currently caging me against a stone monument while he licks his way up my neck.
âRelax, baby doll. Weâre a couple in love,â Dem murmurs, his breath soft and hot against my ear. âPut your arms around my neck to cover my face. Thatâs it.â He shifts, his body completely blocking me from view. âWe ran through this several times. Why are you so nervous? Your pulse is too high.â
âDonât know. But Iâve been doing this a long time. If Iâm nervous, thereâs a reason for it.â
Dem, to his credit, doesnât dispute my pushback. Instead he lifts his head and stares down at me, his dark, steady eyes focused and clear. I indulge myself for the barest second to stare back at him, and whatever he sees in my face pleases him. His mouth quirks into a smile before he details the particulars of the job again, looking for the snag. He leans into me intimately, his hands snaking around my back.
âThen we run through it again. The drop has been made, the very nervous extortion client already come and gone, leaving a backpack tucked under the fountain benches. I count three shadowsâat your three oâclock, six oâclock, and nine oâclock.â
I already spotted them. âThose are only the ones we see.â
âAgreed.â He nuzzles my neck before feathering kisses along my jaw. âEveryone is watching to see if Siccario will move in now that intel has leaked to him that the extortion of one of his friends was successful. Fools.â
I nod, picking up the thread of the orders as I sigh against his lips. âSiccario doesnât want the bag. He wants whoeverâs picking it up.â
Dem continues. âWhen the approach is made, we get close enough to identify the target no matter how well-disguised. We have surveillance in place if we canât make an immediate ID. Siccario is certain itâll be a primary hitter of one of the other families, so we should be able to make him.â
âOr her.â
âOr her,â he repeats without hesitation. âSiccario wants to know the family only. We are not to engage. Is that understood? No violence.â
âNo violence.â I agree, trying to identify why Iâm so jacked up.
